Electrified Cars and DANA Boost Drive 18% Rise in Car Sales in May

The car market in Spain has experienced a significant rebound in May, closing the month with a cumulative growth of 14% so far this year. Although this is a positive figure, it still remains 10.2% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

This surge is largely attributed to the dynamism of the electrified vehicle sector and the boost in sales in areas affected by DANA.

Electrified cars have achieved their best historical record, with 21,861 units sold, representing almost 20% of the total market.

 

Meanwhile, registrations of light commercial vehicles have also grown by 14.9%, reaching 17,885 units. However, the segment of industrial vehicles, buses, coaches, and minibuses continues to decline, with a decrease of 15.5% and 2,517 units registered.

New car sales have reached 112,820 units, an 18.6% increase compared to the same month last year. Sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars (BEV+PHEV) add up to 21,861 new units, marking a 138% growth in May. In the month, electrified vehicles accounted for 19.4%. With these figures, a historic monthly record is set for electrified car sales.

Throughout the year, 77,562 units have been sold, a 71.7% increase from the previous year. In 2025, they already represent 15.8% of the market, 5 percentage points more than in 2024.

This has an impact on the average CO2 emissions of cars sold in May, which drop to 104.1 grams of CO2 per kilometre, 12.6% lower than the average emissions of new cars sold in the same month of 2024. In the cumulative total for 2025, average emissions stand at 108.8%, 7.6% less than in the first quarter of 2024.

Regarding sales by channels, the largest increase is recorded in sales to individuals, with 45,749 units, and a 22.2% rise. The rental channel grows by 18.8% in May with 32,794 sales, and companies add 34,277 new units, a 13.7% increase.
