Mayor of Elda, Rubén Alfaro, presented the project on Monday to renovate the irrigation systems of the Vinalopó Periurban Gardens. This initiative is part of the Sustainable Tourism Plan in Destination, funded by European funds. The works, which have a three-month execution period from the time of awarding, have a budget of 239,000 euros.
The Elda mayor was accompanied during his appearance by the Councillor for Public Space, José Antonio Amat; the Director of the Investment Area, Raquel Fernández, and Marc Pastor, a civil engineer from the Elda City Council.
Rubén Alfaro recalled that "this is a project that our city can carry out without using its own resources, thanks to the efficiency of the work done by the European Funds Department and the local government's commitment to securing as many grants as possible from the European Union."
The renovation of the Vinalopó Gardens' irrigation system is part of the 'Elda part of you' Plan, presented just a week ago, which will allow further progress in the transformation, modernization, and humanization of the city. It is important to remember that the Sustainable Tourism Plan in Destination consists of four axes, one of which (Axis 1) refers to the green and sustainable transition and focuses on the Vinalopó River, the city's backbone thanks to the Vinalopó Gardens.
The Mayor of Elda explained that "the project we present today is included in this Axis 1 and involves a series of actions that will allow us to enhance the value of an emblematic space for Elda. Ultimately, this project reflects the long-term vision of the Elda City Council, which is committed to a sustainable and environmentally friendly growth model."
The project will modernize a key infrastructure, ensuring efficient resource use and environmental conservation. Regarding the project details, the area to be intervened consists of a network of winding paths and flowerbeds. Most of the work will focus on one of these flowerbeds, located between the lake and the Ronda Avenue sidewalk.
In total, more than 8,600 meters of pipes and tubes of different diameters will be installed, and an area of over 13,000 square meters will be addressed.
The main objective is the complete replacement of the current irrigation facilities, a measure that will allow the establishment and maintenance of plant species, achieving coverage that increases biodiversity, helps reduce the heat island effect, and mitigates potential flooding effects. Therefore, the new irrigation installation and its automation will improve the environmental and landscape quality of the Gardens and consolidate them as a place for recreation and leisure.
