Elche will launch the 'Special Jubilee Year Operation' next week to enhance security in the city for this significant celebration. Mayor Pablo Ruz assured that it is a 'maximum, no-compromise' operation to ensure events proceed smoothly.
This follows the arrest of four minors with jihadist profiles by the National Police, who were allegedly planning an attack on the Basilica of Santa María during New Year's Eve, according to details from the ongoing investigation by the National Court. 'Nothing and no one will endanger the city or its residents, especially in 2025 with the Jubilee Year celebration,' the mayor stated.
Therefore, Ruz announced the convening of a Police Coordination Table to bolster city security during the 2025 Jubilee Year. The meeting will take place next week to design, prepare, activate, and execute the 'Special Jubilee Year Operation' with 'maximum, uncompromising, strong measures.'
Additionally, he announced an extraordinary council meeting next Tuesday 'to acknowledge the police's work, the municipal corporation's rejection of the attempted attack, and unanimous support for a concrete action plan for the Jubilee Year.'
The mayor confirmed this after the Extraordinary Local Security Board meeting held in the Consell room, attended by the acting Government sub-delegate, lieutenant colonel of the Civil Guard, chief commissioner of the National Police in Elche, commissioners of the Local Police, chief inspector of the Generalitat Police Unit, the head of the information unit of the Elche Police Station, as well as the city council's secretary-general and members of the municipal government.
Ruz also highlighted the 'gratitude and recognition' towards the State Security Forces and the 'professionalism' of the National Police for the arrests made in jihadism-related matters.
