Elche continues its knack for scoring in the dying moments of matches. Last weekend, Rashani netted against Zaragoza in the 93rd minute, and this Saturday, it was Agustín Álvarez in the 88th minute. These three points in total keep Eder Sarabia's side in the direct promotion zone to La Liga for another week.
Elche dominated the match and had the best chances to secure victory. Just 12 minutes in, the VAR disallowed a goal by Yago Santiago for offside.
Sporting took the lead before the break. Guillermo Rosas capitalised on a series of deflections in the box to find a good opportunity and score past Argentine Matías Dituro.
However, Elche did not give up and found their reward in one of the final plays of the match. Álvaro Núñez outpaced the defenders at the far post and delivered a superb pass for Agustín Álvarez to easily level the score.
The victory was overshadowed by Elche's complaint at the end of the match regarding the racist insults directed at their centre-back Diaby by some fans.
The result leaves Elche in the direct promotion zone to La Liga. However, this Sunday, Racing de Santander or Mirandés could overtake the Ilicitanos if they secure a win.
The match also saw Rashani sent off with a straight red card. Next week, Elche will host Eibar at the Martínez Valero on Friday at 8:30 PM.
