As has become customary since Argentine Christian Bragarnik took the helm at Elche, the club faces a storm of criticism during the transfer window. Whether it's summer or winter, Bragarnik's inaction leaves the squad significantly weakened, and recent weeks have been particularly alarming. Bragarnik had promised to build a competitive team to fight for promotion, but not only have new signings failed to materialize, but sporting director Chema Aragón also resigned due to disagreements with Bragarnik. Additionally, Eder Sarabia's team has started the league with two defeats and numerous doubts.
So far, Elche has made four signings and needs at least three more, one for each line of play. Above all, these reinforcements must be of high quality, as some positions are clearly lacking reliable players. The most concerning area is the attack, much like last season. Bragarnik has been unable to sign a prolific striker in the last year and a half, much to the disbelief of a fanbase that has run out of patience. Meanwhile, new coach Sarabia remains conciliatory in his public appearances and is confident that the signings will arrive before the market closes on the 30th.
Elche needs these signings desperately, but with Bragarnik, anything is possible. It wouldn't be surprising if he opens the exit door for his compatriots Nico Fernández Mercau or Nico Castro if good offers come in, as they are players with market value.
On another note, Sarabia's team has matched its poor start from last season. The team lost its league debut against Huesca (0-1) and suffered another disappointment in Albacete (1-0), where they were defeated by a goal from Fidel Chaves, a former player and captain of the team in recent seasons.
Last season, newly relegated from La Liga, Elche also lost their debut at home in the Martínez Valero stadium against Racing de Ferrol (0-1). A week later, under Argentine coach Sebastián Beccacece, they were defeated by Eibar at Ipurúa stadium.
This time around, Sarabia's team will face Córdoba (Monday at 9:30 PM), a newly promoted side, with the obligation to secure points to dispel the doubts already surrounding the current sports project and avoid falling prematurely behind in the standings.
