Elche City Council has approved the mayor's proposal to request reinforcement measures against recurring violence, with support from the PP, Vox, and PSOE, and opposition from Compromís per Elx.

Mayor Pablo Ruz expressed his concern over crimes committed by previously convicted individuals, particularly in the Carrús neighbourhood. He called for urgent measures to strengthen police presence in the area. Recent security data indicates that over 30% of violent crime cases in this neighbourhood are caused by repeat offenders.

In fact, in the first half of the year alone, the Local Police recorded 11,800 interventions, a 12% increase from the previous year, resulting in 2,046 complaints and 212 arrests.

"The issue of criminal recidivism not only affects the city of Elche," said Ruz, "it affects the entire nation, but we bring this proposal to the council because the residents of Carrús demand more security. We need our police to continue acting and addressing crime effectively."

In this regard, the City Council has approved a request to increase the number of National Police officers in Carrús and to enhance the presence of Local Police. Additionally, it has requested the Spanish Government to amend the Criminal Procedure Law to allow for the application of pre-trial detention for repeat offenders.

The mayor demanded "greater severity in the application of laws for criminals." He explained that Elche continues to have lower crime rates compared to other nearby municipalities, but "we are concerned, and our duty is to deter those who commit these crimes."
