On Resurrection Sunday, the most festive day of the Alicante Easter Week arrives. Not only is it marked by the proclamation of Christ's ascension to heaven and the thousands of hallelujahs, thrown from the Town Hall balcony, adding colour to the meeting of the Virgin of Joy and the Risen Christ. The Bonfires of Saint John, the city's official festivities, join with the Major Board, and the belles, bonfire builders, and barrackers participate in their traditional attire in the Sunday morning procession.

Through the streets of Alicante, the two brotherhoods will process until they reach the Town Hall square at 12 noon, where the floats will be greeted with hallelujahs - papers with images and prayers - by the devotees.

Glorious Brotherhood of Our Lady of Joy

A float carried by bonfire builders and barrackers

The Virgin of Joy steps out onto the streets of Alicante at 11:30 am, carried on the shoulders of bonfire builders and barrackers from the Alicante Bonfires. Thus, the Basilica of Santa Maria opens its doors to mark the passage of this image on men dressed in zaragüell, sash, and blue scarf.

The sculpture by José María Leal Bernáldez will be guarded by the belles of the fire and their dames of honour, along with the candidates, to the sound of the pasodoble 'José Ángel Guirao' performed by the band of the Carolinas Altas Cultural Sports Society.

This Virgin will traditionally wear a mantle covered with natural flowers, which changes design every year. This year, the design was created by a girl who won the contest held by the brotherhood.

It will begin its journey along Jorge Juan Street until it reaches the Encounter with the Risen Christ at the Town Hall square, where they will be welcomed with hallelujahs.

This is one of the most emotional moments of Easter Week, representing the meeting between the Virgin and Christ once resurrected. Amid music and joy, the two figures will continue their journey together along Cervantes Street, Plaza del Mar, the Esplanade, La Rambla, and Miguel Soler.

Around 2 pm, the procession will enter the co-cathedral of San Nicolás. The Virgin will continue her journey from there to the Basilica of Santa Maria, where the entrance is expected at 2:30 pm. Prior to the Sunday procession, on Holy Saturday, the titular image is transferred on the shoulders of the women of the Brotherhood.

Most Holy Risen Christ

The union of all the Brotherhoods

The Most Holy Risen Christ will also walk through the streets of Alicante on Resurrection Sunday. The procession will begin its journey at 10:45 am from the co-cathedral of San Nicolás, guided through Abad Penalva square and San Nicolás and Mayor streets.

Once it crosses the portico of the Alicante Town Hall, the float will emerge into the Town Hall square to meet its mother, the Virgin of Joy, at 12 noon. At this emotional moment, the traditional Hallelujahs will be thrown from the balconies of the square.
