Armand Duplantis of Sweden set a new pole vault world record by clearing 6.28 metres at the Diamond League meeting held this Sunday in Stockholm. This marks the twelfth time the Nordic athlete has broken the world record.
The double Olympic champion improved his previous record, set in February, by one centimetre on his first attempt, taking advantage of the ideal conditions offered by the meeting to delight the local audience.
Duplantis fulfilled the promise he made to local fans to attempt to break his own record, achieving it in a stadium that was in awe of the great Swedish athletics star.
The leading figure in the discipline found himself without competition after Australia's Kurtis Marschall failed three attempts to surpass the six-metre barrier. Duplantis then decided to set the bar at 6.28 metres to establish a new record. He succeeded on his first try, completing a perfect competition that sets the world record twelve centimetres higher than the 6.16 metres set by France's Renaud Lavillenie, which now seems modest since the emergence of the brilliant Swedish athlete.
Although Duplantis's historic jump was not entirely clean, as he brushed the bar with his legs, it did not fall, sparking an eruption of joy in the stands.
