The reckless behaviour of a driver under the influence led to the deaths of two occupants of a quadricycle on the N-340, near Cox, on October 24, 2020. Over four years after the fatal accident involving three vehicles, the driver is now facing trial at the Alicante Provincial Court.
The prosecution is seeking a four-year prison sentence and a six-year driving ban for the accused. The defendant tested positive for alcohol with more than two grams of ethyl alcohol per litre of blood.
The incident occurred on October 24, 2020, around 8 PM, when the defendant was driving along the N-340 through the municipality of Cox. He veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a quadricycle carrying two people, which then side-collided with another car carrying a family of four, including two young girls.
The two occupants of the quadricycle died from injuries sustained in the crash. The four individuals in the other car involved suffered various injuries. The trial is scheduled for this Thursday, March 13, at the Seventh Section (Elche) at 9:30 AM.
On the same day, but in the Third Section, a man faces six years in prison for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. He is accused of captaining a boat carrying 16 people, including a minor, from Algeria to the coast of Alicante on September 2.
The public prosecutor reports that the boat lacked safety measures and sufficient food for the passengers, who were found adrift by a Maritime Rescue vessel.
