The drought has condemned the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Alicante Wines to harvest the smallest grape yield for winemaking in recent years. The production registered to the PDO has been about 15 million kilos, a 23% decrease compared to the previous 2023, when the harvest was also low.

The grapes have an average Baumé degree of 11.972, almost a point lower than last year's. By regions, the Middle Vinalopó accounted for 68.1% of the production and the Upper Vinalopó 30%, while the Marina Alta gathered the rest.

The harvest began at the end of July and extended until mid-October with batches of Monastrell that were overripe. However, the PDO insists that the grapes maintain "high levels of quality and health in their variety". The low endogenous yields of the area suggest a powerful vintage, they explain.

In recent years, the province has been hit by drought, which is especially severe in the Marina Alta, where the vineyard lacks irrigation due to geographical and climatic conditions. Moreover, this situation has increased the appearance of pests in search of surviving food, such as wild boars, green mosquitoes, or rabbits.

The Regulatory Council of the Alicante PDO has warned through various campaigns about the necessary protection that the vineyard needs at this time to maintain fertile land in these regions and the necessary involvement of administrations, sommeliers, hospitality, media, and young people in protecting this unique plant material in the world and one of the historical crops of the area.
