Luka Doncic made it clear last night that he is ready to lead the Lakers in their championship quest. After weeks of speculation about his physical condition and adaptation to his new team, the Slovenian delivered his first major performance in the Lakers jersey, guiding his team to a commanding victory in Denver by 100-123, thus ending the Nuggets' nine-game winning streak.
Doncic, who had not played in the previous game against the Portland Trail Blazers to avoid straining his recovery from a calf injury, showed his best form. In 31 minutes of play, the Slovenian contributed 32 points, ten rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. His performance included a 45.5% field goal percentage (10 of 22), four of nine in three-pointers, and a perfect eight of eight from the free-throw line, being the key piece in a victory that was never in doubt.
The first half was a true demonstration of superiority by the Lakers. With a lead of up to 23 points, the Lakers dominated the Nuggets, who could not stop the collective play onslaught from Los Angeles, where Doncic was supported by LeBron James (25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists), Austin Reaves (23 points, 7 assists), and Rui Hachimura (21 points). The connection between Doncic and James, which was already beginning to take shape, showed flashes of brilliance, such as their first 'alley-oop', which promises many more such plays in the future.
On the other hand, the Nuggets, who came into the game with the league's best active winning streak, having won nine consecutive games, were surprised by the Lakers' intensity from the first minute. Despite Nikola Jokić's triple-double (12 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists), the Serbian could not prevent his team's defeat, as the Nuggets did not know how to respond to the Lakers' constant pressure. Additionally, Jokić committed 6 turnovers in a game where Denver accumulated 20, facilitating the Lakers' superiority on the scoreboard.
The game was not without its ups and downs for the Lakers. After an almost perfect first half, the Nuggets managed to close the gap to nine points at the start of the second half. However, a 0-10 run in favor of Los Angeles dashed any hopes of a local comeback. The Nuggets, despite the efforts of Aaron Gordon (24 points) and Jamal Murray (19 points), could not prevent the Lakers from taking full control of the game in the third and fourth quarters.
This victory holds a double significance for the Lakers. Not only is it a step forward in their attempt to climb the standings in the Western Conference, where they are now just two wins behind the Nuggets, but it also represents a significant advancement in Doncic's adaptation, who is beginning to feel fully comfortable in his new team. "I finally feel like myself," the Slovenian assured after the game, putting to rest doubts about his physical condition.
