The theft of vehicles in Spain continues to rise, according to the latest figures published by the Ministry of the Interior's Crime Balance. In the third quarter of 2024, a total of 8,568 vehicles were stolen, accumulating to 24,840 cars in the first three quarters.

While the number of stolen vehicles increased evenly across the country, rising in up to 12 autonomous communities and cities, there were notable surges. The most significant increase in vehicle thefts compared to the same period last year was in Cantabria, where thefts rose from 90 to 130 vehicles (44.4%). There were also considerable increases in Ceuta (23.4%) and Castilla y León (20.6%).

On the other hand, vehicle thefts decreased in seven autonomous communities and cities. The most significant reduction was in the Principality of Asturias, where car thefts dropped from 195 to 161 units (-17.4%). Similar declines were observed in Melilla (-16.7%) and Aragón (-14.2%).

The autonomous community with the highest number of vehicle thefts during the first nine months of 2024 was Catalonia, with 6,408 vehicles stolen. It was followed by the Community of Madrid (5,279) and Andalusia (4,556).

"Analyzing vehicle theft figures allows us to see which regions are most affected by this issue and take measures to prevent further increases. These figures serve as a clear warning to the public, who should be more vigilant about their vehicles and consider protecting them with advanced technological solutions," explains José Ignacio Rubio, general director of LoJack Iberia.

"It is also a call to action for the authorities, who must take note to increase surveillance and lighting in the highlighted areas," he adds.
