Monóvar, a hidden gem in the heart of Alicante, offers an ideal plan for lovers of gastronomy, natural surroundings, and history. This town, unique in the province for having 7 wineries—a notable growth from the 4 it had a few years ago—is ready to surprise its visitors with a rich cultural tradition, unique landscapes, and a cuisine that has even captivated figures like Ferrán Adrià.

Start your morning with a simple nature trail around Monóvar. An ideal option is the PR-CV 160, which traverses the surroundings of the Sierra del Coto, offering spectacular views and an approximate duration of 1 hour, perfect for families. These types of routes allow you to connect with nature, discover local biodiversity, and start the day with energy.

Sacristía Bodegas Monóvar

After the walk, it's time to enjoy an authentic Monóvar lunch, famous for its flavour and tradition. At Casa Sanchis, located in a natural setting, you can try the gachamiga, accompanied by grilled meat, eggs, and potatoes, all paired with a good local wine.

With 7 active wineries, Monóvar is a wine reference in the Valencian Community. We recommend visiting Bodegas Monóvar to taste the emblematic Fondillón, a historic wine with Denomination of Origin Alicante, recently recognized as the BEST WINE OF THE YEAR 2024 by the Spanish Association of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Writers (AEPEV). You can also visit the cooperative in the hamlet of El Manyà, Primitivo Quiles, or Bodegas Alejandro, where local reds and rosés will surprise you.

Gastronomy of Monóvar

Monóvar boasts nearly 20 traditional bakeries, where you can try delights such as toñas, crespells, monjavenes, coca en mantega, or coca amb oli. Don't miss the cheeses from Los Molinos, made artisanally with Murcian-Granadian goat milk and without additives, and with numerous awards and recognitions. Their goat cheese with lavender and rosemary is a must. Visit their shop opposite the Alameda park to learn more about their sustainable process.

Monóvar has 5 hamlets, each with its charm. In El Chinorlet, Restaurante Elías is famous for preparing the best rabbit and snail rice, according to Madrid Fusión. In Las Casas del Señor, enjoy grilled meat and rice cooked over a wood fire. Other hamlets like El Hondón, El Manyà, and Las Canyadas de Don Ciro also offer charming walks through their vineyards or natural routes worth exploring.

In the afternoon, discover the historical richness of Monóvar. Visit the El Fondó air-raid shelter, a key location at the end of the Civil War where figures like Negrín, La Pasionaria, and Alberti last set foot on Republican soil. Then, stroll through the La Goletja neighbourhood, with its steep streets, and the old town, which includes the Clock Tower and the Santa Bárbara Hermitage.

Before ending your visit, take a piece of Monóvar with you with local products like Fondillón, Los Molinos cheeses, or traditional sweets. Monóvar is more than a destination; it's an experience that combines culture, nature, and gastronomy at its finest.
