Measures taken by the municipalities of Marina Alta to curb the proliferation of wild boars are yielding results. Last week, El Verger and Els Poblets announced the capture of 47 specimens in December thanks to their programme, and now Dénia has released its figures. The traps installed in the regional capital have captured a total of 72 wild boars in the last quarter of the previous year, according to municipal sources on Tuesday.
The council, as announced by the Councillor for Ecological Transition, Sandra Gertrúdix, at the end of last summer, has hired a specialised company to tackle the problem posed by the increasing presence of these animals in the municipality. This task is entrusted to the company Ibérica Control y Capturas SL, the same one providing such services to Els Poblets and El Verger, and soon to Ondara.

In Dénia, the two traps are located in Plana d'Elies and Montgó, specifically on Magrana Street. In the first location, 28 specimens were captured between October and December, 18 of which were females. The trap on Magrana Street was more fruitful, capturing 44 wild boars, 36 of which were females. The council indicated that all these animals were analysed and, finding no disease, were deemed "fit for the food chain".

Given the large number of specimens and the success of this system, it is planned to increase the number of devices. In fact, the company is examining the best location in the Les Marines area. A third trap will be placed between the Regatxo and L'Alberca ravines.
Sandra Gertrúdix highlighted the satisfaction with the figures achieved in these first months of operation. The councillor hopes that this measure, the control actions carried out by the Department of Environment, and the hunters' drives in the Montgó natural park will solve the overpopulation problem.
The councillor also highlighted that reports from the department indicate that the wild boar population density in the Montgó natural park has decreased over the past two years since monitoring began. She emphasised that "trapping and the actions of hunting clubs are yielding good results, which have been reinforced by the traps installed by the council".
