Denia Hospital attends to hundreds of patients each year in the Functional Recovery Unit (FRU). This is a comprehensive rehabilitation unit aimed at restoring motor and/or cognitive capacity in patients who have suffered an acute episode due to a debilitating pathology or injury.

The FRU is a multidisciplinary hospital unit, composed of specialists in Internal Medicine, Rehabilitation, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Social Work, Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing.

The space, which has just been refurbished, includes eight hospital beds, a gym, and two therapy rooms, as well as a designated area that simulates a home environment. Here, various therapies are conducted intensively, both in the morning and afternoon, to help each patient regain basic autonomy skills.

According to the head of the Rehabilitation Service, Álvaro Escuder, "the refurbishment of this space allows us to work directly on the patients' functional capacities. It's not just about exercises on a stretcher, but recreating real-life situations they will face at home."

Since its inception two years ago, the FRU has treated over 200 patients with excellent results, as starting rehabilitation in the first week after brain damage or surgery significantly improves recovery rates. Additionally, hospital stays are shortened, enhancing comfort for both patients and their families.

Patient Profile

The patient profile that meets the inclusion criteria for the Functional Recovery Unit is one who has suffered brain damage due to a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or conditions such as arteriovenous malformations or cerebral infarctions. The FRU also admits patients who have been bedridden for extended periods due to major surgeries, severe infections, or debilitating illnesses.

In the case of younger patients, the causes are often traumatic brain injuries due to traffic accidents or falls, as well as cerebral infarctions caused by arteriovenous malformations or substance use. For them, the FRU team works on not only physical recovery but also cognitive and emotional recovery, with support from specialists in Neuropsychology and Social Work.

This group of patients finds a safe and specialised environment for their recovery in the FRU. "There are no exclusion criteria based on age," explained Escuder, who added that "people over 90 years old and also young patients, even minors, with severe trauma are treated."
