At the start of a new year, many couples and single women are motivated to take the significant step towards motherhood. Following a 2024 marked by the lowest birth rates on record (INE), an increasing number of individuals are turning to reproductive medicine to have children. According to the latest report from the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), 11% of births in Spain are attributed to assisted reproduction.

However, experts point out that these figures rise annually due to various factors, including delayed motherhood, posing an ever-growing challenge for reproductive medicine professionals. "The figure varies depending on the year, but the trend is upward, with a 30% increase in demand for treatments at our Instituto Bernabeu clinics," explains Dr. Andrea Bernabeu, Medical Director of Instituto Bernabeu.

The reasons for seeking scientific assistance to conceive a child are diverse. "Predominantly, cases involve advanced maternal age and unsuccessful pregnancy attempts over many months between partners, or, logically, situations where one wishes to start a maternity treatment alone or as a female couple," notes Dr. Bernabeu.

The average age for women having their first child in Spain is 31.5 years (INE), even higher among women born in Spain (32.18 years) compared to those born abroad (28.47).

The emotional aspect is also significant in deciding to visit a clinic. "As we conclude a year, it's common to reflect on our achievements and what remains unaccomplished, with having a child often being a consideration. This reflection can empower us to pursue treatment in the new year," suggests psychologist Natalia Romera, Head of the Emotional Support Unit at Instituto Bernabeu.

Romera further adds that "the start of a new year brings new resolutions, new goals, or sometimes the same objective we've postponed for a year due to various reasons. It's a good time to revisit it, as despite any delays, it's one of the most important projects of our lives. Starting the year with this project brings us hope and excitement."

Spain has established itself as a leader in reproductive medicine, leading in the number of fertility treatments. This leadership is attributed to advanced legislation and the excellence of its professionals and clinics. A notable example is Instituto Bernabeu, which annually attracts patients from 137 different nationalities, reflecting its international prestige and the trust placed by people worldwide to undergo fertility treatments.
