Kyren Lacy, once seen as a rising star in American football, tragically passed away this weekend following a lengthy police chase. The 24-year-old athlete died instantly after crashing his car.
His short life was marked by the duality of a promising career on the NFL fields and the shadows of legal and police troubles. Initial investigations suggest a suicide, marking the end of a tumultuous period in recent months.
Despite being a top prospect for the upcoming NFL draft and the star player for Louisiana State University, Lacy had been overshadowed by off-field issues for several months.
In December, he caused an accident resulting in a head-on collision with two other vehicles, leading to the death of one driver. Guilty of reckless driving, he fled the scene without offering help and was charged with negligent homicide and hit-and-run. A $51,000 bail spared him from jail, but his life was irrevocably changed.
His candidacy for the 2025 draft, submitted just days after the incident, was an attempt to salvage an unsalvageable situation: predictions of him being a top player quickly dissipated.
"Our lives have changed forever, and this will never be right, but God needed my baby more than we did here. This must be the worst nightmare our families have faced, but I know the love and compassion of our families will help us through," wrote Kenny Lacy, the athlete's father, on social media. He had previously spoken about the importance of mental health care for children shortly after the accident caused by Kyren.
