Valencian Generalitat, Alicante City Council, and the Provincial Council have united in what they describe as the "formula for success" to finally bring a Congress Centre to Alicante. This was confirmed on Monday by the top representatives of the three institutions, Carlos Mazón, Luis Barcala, and Toni Pérez, respectively, during the award ceremony of the international competition held to create this "iconic" infrastructure for the city, which aims to be an "international benchmark" for Alicante in the Mediterranean.
The winning project was 'San Carlos', which revives the forms of the old defensive bastion of the same name that protected the south of Alicante in the 17th century from pirate and Berber attacks. It will feature three auditoriums with capacities for 2,000, 500, and 300 people, as well as exhibition halls, cafes, and a restaurant. The architectural firm Frade Arquitectos, Luca Poian Forms Limited, and Prointec was the winning proposal among the 120 projects submitted. All the winners and their runners-up can be seen in the exhibition hall of the Provincial Palace, where they are displayed.

Now, with the final project in place, the next step is to commence construction. This will not be easy. The location at the Poniente dock, behind Panoramis, is owned by the Port Authority. However, before obtaining the necessary permits, the Special Port Plan must be amended to authorize the use of the future Congress Centre.
This process is expected to take at least 18 months, according to sources consulted by TodoAlicante. In fact, the President of the Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, has acknowledged that the Congress Centre will not have a budget until the spring of 2026, although initial estimates suggest an investment of no less than €100 million. From there, with the land available and the final amount known, the tendering and construction of the works would follow. It seems unlikely to be completed in the current legislative term.
However, according to the President of the Generalitat, the important thing is not so much setting dates as taking "solid steps to ensure there is no turning back." Mazón has pledged the Consell's financial support for the launch of the Congress Centre "with special allocations once the Special Port Plan is in place." This is expected in 2026.
As a result, there are no special chapters in the budgets of any administration for this infrastructure. It will be next year when they are allocated, according to the timelines explained on Monday.
Thus, Mazón emphasized that the Alicante Congress Centre "settles a historical debt with the city and incorporates a new engine of economic growth with an impact on the entire Valencian Community." Meanwhile, the Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, highlighted "the involvement, effort, and joint work of the Generalitat, the Port Authority, the Provincial Council, and the Alicante City Council" as a "guarantee of the project's success."
