Two couples have been investigated by the Civil Guard as alleged perpetrators of animal cruelty resulting in death. It was on their farm, located in a municipality of Alicante, where officers discovered the bodies of two horses covered with plastic and two others in an advanced state of decomposition.

In the same area, there were three other living horses, along with several goats and dogs, all in inadequate conditions. The owners, a 50-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, have been brought before the Court of Novelda and face prison sentences ranging from three to 18 months, fines from six to 12 months, and a special disqualification from one to three years for activities related to animals and their ownership.

The investigation began in mid-November when agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of Monóvar received information - thanks to citizen collaboration - about a farm located in a town in Medio Vinalopó where animals were found in deplorable conditions, some already dead.

The first phase of the investigation helped locate the farm and conduct a visit, during which they were able to verify the reported facts. After locating it, the agents conducted discreet surveillance, confirming the presence of animals in a state of neglect.

Subsequently, with the collaboration of the veterinarian from the Regional Agricultural Office (OCA) of Novelda, the site was inspected, at which point the agents found the bodies of two horses covered and another pair of equines in an advanced state of decomposition, along with the rest of the animals in poor condition.

Veterinary reports determined that one of the living horses had to be euthanized due to its critical condition, while the rest of the animals - two other horses, dogs, and goats - were relocated to another farm to safeguard their lives and ensure their welfare.

In addition to the investigation and judicial proceedings, the animal owners have been reported under Law 7/2023, of March 28, for the protection of animal rights and welfare, and Law 50/1999, of December 23, on the Legal Regime of the Ownership of Potentially Dangerous Animals, due to the situation of the animals and lack of various documentation, as well as Law 8/2003, of April 24, on animal health for the sanitary conditions of the farm.

This action highlights the Civil Guard's commitment to enforcing regulations that safeguard animal welfare, while also emphasizing the importance of citizen cooperation in detecting and reporting such cases.
