Castellón province has emerged as one of the most comprehensive cycling tourism destinations in the Mediterranean. It offers a vast array of contrasting landscapes and routes, with the Plana Baixa region in the south providing a privileged terrain where stunning mountainous landscapes and coastal routes coexist, perfect for enjoying on two wheels. This unique combination makes the area a reference point for both professional cyclists and enthusiasts, as well as families looking to explore the region actively.
Road cyclists find an ideal setting in Plana Baixa. The routes along the southern coast of Castellón allow for pure enjoyment of the Mediterranean Sea. From Moncofa to Burriana, passing through Nules, the paths combine perfect plains for a good pace with gentle slopes that add variety to the journey.
In this context, the EuroVelo 8, which traverses the region from north to south, offers a unique opportunity for international cycling tourism, connecting Plana Baixa with the extensive network of European routes.
From Vila-real, other beginner-friendly options can be found, such as the route linking the beach and the foot of the Sierra de Espadán, with just 240 meters of elevation over 43 kilometers, featuring gentle inclines, passing by the Mijares River and towns like Bejís, Vilavella, Nules, or Burriana, through peaceful landscapes constantly accompanied by vast expanses of orange groves.
Another suggestion for all types of bike users is the route starting from Moncofa, covering approximately 41 km almost at sea level. This journey runs almost entirely along the Mediterranean coast towards Xilxes and Almenara, with a few small hills that will demand a bit more from the legs in short sections, but it remains fully accessible and offers the added attraction of the extensive beaches of the Castellón coastline.
Additionally, the proximity of other landmarks such as the Sierra Calderona offers cyclists alternative routes, such as the one connecting this natural park with towns like Almenara. A scenic route that winds through citrus fields and small villages until reaching the foot of the mountains, always on well-maintained asphalt.
Ultimately, Plana Baixa presents itself as a top-tier cycling tourism destination, with options for all levels and ages. From family routes by the sea to mountain challenges in the heart of the sierra, the region positions itself as a place where sport, landscape, and culture merge into a unique experience on two wheels.
