Plans by the Government of Pedro Sánchez to cut cubic hectometres from the Tajo-Segura Transfer "endanger the survival" of agriculture in the province of Alicante, especially in the Vega Baja region.
The Councillor for Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Barrachina, has emphasised that desalination policies by Pedro Sánchez will cause losses of up to six million euros for the sector, as well as the destruction of 15,000 jobs in the province of Alicante, along with the "felling of 10 million trees".

These will be the reflections that the councillor will address this Monday at the 'Horizon 2027. Water Challenges' forum, which will be held in Murcia organised by Scrats and La Verdad. Additionally, Barrachina will discuss the challenges facing agriculture in the Community in light of the Transfer cuts.
Barrachina points out, ahead of the event, that Alicante's agriculture depends on transferred water, a necessity "based on irrefutable technical data". At the same time, he describes the central Government's stance as "dogmatism without rigour", a policy that "lets the water Alicante needs go to waste in Portugal".
The councillor will participate in a round table alongside representatives from the regional governments of the Community of Madrid, the Region of Murcia, and the Junta of Andalusia, where he will present the current water situation in the Valencian Community and highlight the key reasons to maintain the Tajo-Segura transfer.
"This Consell demands the water that is rightfully ours, backed by reason and the solid track record of exemplary management that has historically characterised the Valencian Community, and particularly the province of Alicante, where every drop of water is used efficiently and is essential to preserve our agriculture," defends Barrachina.
In this regard, the Councillor for Agriculture states that the Government of Pedro Sánchez "makes the grave mistake of believing that Spain's water does not belong to everyone, punishing the Valencian Community time and again. Water planning cannot focus solely on desalination, as this is a mistake from an ecological, economic, and energy perspective, as well as a lack of solidarity between territories."
Finally, Barrachina notes that "we need a Government of Spain that, like the Consell of Mazón, believes in our land and in our farmers and irrigators. We do not want more than anyone else, but neither do we want less than anyone else. We advocate for a National Water Pact because water is a matter of state, it belongs to everyone. It is not owned by anyone. We stand for solidarity between territories and not for confrontation between territories."
