La Cova de l'Or concludes its visiting season this weekend. The archaeological site in Beniarrés will remain closed to the public until mid-March next year to avoid adverse weather conditions.

The site rises to 675 metres above sea level and is located on the southern slope of the Benicadell mountain range which forms part of the Sierra del Benicandell. All of this, as well as the interior of the cave, can be admired during visits offered by the CV Marq Foundation in collaboration with the Beniarrés Town Council.

Thus, due to winter weather, this significant Neolithic site, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, will open its doors along with its various museum rooms during the spring. So far, nearly 3,000 people have visited the site through this initiative.

Visits to the Cova de l'Or allow visitors to appreciate the quality and significance of the archaeological material found in excavations a century ago. This cavity would have been a social reference point for Mediterranean-origin settlers who, in the mid-6th millennium BC, introduced agriculture and livestock to these valleys.

In the Cova de l'Or, material elements have been found that testify to the importance of occupation in the Early Neolithic (5500-5000 BC), when the site was an ideal place for habitation.

From that historical period come the accumulations of wheat and barley seeds, typical of ancient crops, found inside, as well as pottery impressed with shells, particularly those featuring human figures with raised arms, alone in a praying position or in groups evoking a dance.

For over three years, it has hosted organised groups for guided tours that culminate in the cave with an interesting cultural and scenic tour that begins at the interpretation centre, located in the urban centre of Beniarrés.
