Councillor Resigns from Xunta Amid Investigation into Alleged Sexual Assault

Alfonso Villares, the Xunta's Minister of the Sea, announced his resignation on Wednesday after being notified by the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia (TSXG) that he is under investigation in a judicial process affecting his 'personal sphere.'

'I do not want this to impact the Xunta or autonomous institutions,' stated the councillor, who has already informed the President of the Galician Government, Alfonso Rueda, of his departure.

Villares has declared himself 'absolutely innocent' of the allegations against him and assured that he will focus all his 'strength' on defending himself in the judicial arena.

The complaint filed is for sexual assault, according to sources familiar with the case.
