Marian Cano, the Councillor for Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, has reiterated the 'non-negotiable necessity' to initiate the project for the second runway at Alicante-Elche Airport, a project 'already planned within the infrastructure expansion plan'.

Cano emphasised the 'record figures' achieved in the airport infrastructures of the Valencian Community in 2024 and added that this Monday 'the precise passenger data for the airports of Valencia and Alicante-Elche will be known', as indicated by the Generalitat in a statement.

With these data, she argued, 'the need to address more ambitious expansion projects for these two infrastructures, which are key to the development of the Valencian economy, will be evident'. 'We are breaking records in passengers, tourists, and spending, and we need a project that reflects and accommodates the anticipated growth for the coming years,' she demanded.

Thus, she considered the public tender for the technical assistance in drafting the project for the works of the expansion of the airport launched by Aena this Friday, with a budget of 20 million euros, as 'insufficient', and demanded 'a firm commitment to meet the needs of the entrepreneurs', following the studies by the Chambers of Commerce of Alicante and the Valencian Community, which 'estimate annual losses of nearly 2 billion euros due to delaying the works of the second runway at Alicante-Elche and the Manises terminal'.

'The infrastructure deficit that the Community drags cannot be ignored, nor can the fact that the province of Alicante has been the last in Spain in per capita investment for several years. And we will not settle for a patch when other projects such as the expansion of El Prat Airport, with an investment of 1.7 billion euros and the plan to build a third runway, are being materialised,' she reproached.

Furthermore, she called on the central government to launch 'as soon as possible' the railway connection for Alicante-Elche Airport. 'It is a historical grievance for the province and the Community, unique in all of Europe if we consider that it is the only infrastructure of its size that does not have this type of service for the more than 17 million passengers it receives each year,' she reiterated.
