Correos unveiled the stamp dedicated to writer María Ibars at Dénia's Town Hall this Thursday. Released on January 9th, the postal company issued this stamp to pay tribute to the author, who was named Writer of the Year 2024 by the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua.
The presentation featured speeches from Correos' Director of Philately and Institutional Relations, Nuria Lera; the Mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt; and the President of the Institut d'Estudis Comarcals de la Marina Alta, Rosa Seser. Additionally, José Ivars, President of the Philatelic and Numismatic Group of Calp, who also requested this stamp, participated in the honorary postmarking.
The 72,000 stamps issued by Correos are priced at 3 euros and feature a photograph of the writer alongside three of her most renowned books: L'últim serf, Vides Planes, and Poemes de Penyamar.
María Ibars was born in Valencia in 1892 but was deeply connected to Dénia, the city of her family's origin, where she spent her childhood and adolescence. The writer grew up near raisin warehouses that employed many workers, particularly women, with their human and labor conflicts. Her experiences, the city, the countryside, and the landscape of Dénia, the Montgó, and the sea, profoundly influenced her literary work, both in poetry and prose. Texts written in Penyamar, her home in les Rotes, by the sea and "in the shadow of the Montgó," as the author notes.
Of humble origin, her passion for study led her to train as a teacher in Valencia, securing a teaching position in La Font de la Figuera, where she met her husband, Vicente Payá, and had her children: Raquel and Vicente-Darío. The year 1934 marked a turning point in her life as she moved with her children to work in Valencia. There, she joined the Valencianist circles of Lo Rat Penat, guided by Carles Salvador, a former classmate. She earned the title of Valencian teacher and published poems and texts in her language in the press.
The Civil War and the difficult post-war period halted all initiatives. The author, with a firm and solitary character, published her work with great difficulty. In 1949, Poemes de Penyamar appeared, and in 1951, some poems from Ram a l'amiga, partly unpublished. Her narrative work took even longer to come to light. In Spanish, she published Como una garra (1961) and Graciamar (1963); in Valencian, being a pioneer in the genre, her most notable works were Vides planes (1962) and L'últim serf (1965). She also published plays, Contalles (1961-1966), and contributed to the weekly La Marina (1960-1965). After a brief silence, she passed away in Valencia on January 9, 1965.
It is noteworthy that this is the first stamp Correos has dedicated to an Alicante writer. Over the past few years, Correos has issued numerous stamps with themes related to the province of Alicante. The most recent was released in April 2024, celebrating the Moros y Cristianos festival in Alcoy. A year earlier, another postal effect was issued dedicated to the famous Muralla Roja of Calp as part of the commemorations for the Year of Bofill. Going back further, in 2022, Correos launched a stamp dedicated to the "50th Anniversary of the Zero Level Implementation in Alicante"; and another featuring the image of Tabarca Island. Previously, the Balmis operation was commemorated, and in 2018, the Volvo Ocean Race was also the subject of another issue.
In the province of Alicante, iconic places such as the Church of San Jorge in Alcoy, the Peñón de Ifach, Elche's Palm Grove, or the castles of Santa Bárbara, Villena, Banyeres, or Biar have also been worthy of their corresponding philatelic issues.
