Controversy in Calp. The arrival of 140 irregular immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb, coming from the Canary Islands to an aparthotel without the Town Hall's approval, as announced in a communiqué, has caused a social upheaval in the municipality of the Peñón de Ifach.

The Town Hall, governed by Somos Calpe, PSOE, and Compromís, has issued a statement distancing itself from the initiative. The communiqué asserts that it has not been informed of this project and that it is a "private agreement" between Cepaim (Consortium of Entities for Comprehensive Action with Migrants) and the aparthotel that will host the foreigners.

According to TodoAlicante, the Carrio Sol Aparthotel offers 17 rooms, each accommodating no more than three guests. Therefore, the 140 immigrants will not arrive simultaneously but in several groups over the three-month duration of the project. Currently, the accommodation does not accept reservations through its website.

Sources indicate that around twenty foreigners will arrive in the first days, receiving basic support but not the regularisation of their immigration status or health card, as registration in the municipality for over three months is required to access it. Furthermore, the new immigration legislation stipulates that in cases of serious illness, foreigners should be repatriated to their country of origin instead of receiving care from the Spanish public health system.

Full statement from the Calp Town Hall

In response to information published in a media outlet about the hosting of 140 irregular sub-Saharan and Maghreb immigrants in a hotel in Calp, the Calp Town Hall states that:

No one has informed the Town Hall about this matter. Only this week has the Fundación Cepaim (Consortium of Entities for Comprehensive Action with Migrants), which manages the hosting of these immigrants, requested a meeting to discuss this issue.

This is an agreement between the Carrio Sol Aparthotel and the Fundación Cepaim, in which the Town Hall has had no involvement, nor was it aware of its existence.

When more information is available, the Town Hall will inform the public of all details concerning this matter.
