"I can't take it anymore." With these words, the singer Nuria Fergó interrupted her concert last Saturday in La Vila Joiosa and announced its cancellation on the spot. "I'm sorry to inform you that I've just made the decision," she addressed the audience after a "Stop Chamorro!" that ended the music.
Nuria Fergó travelled last Saturday to La Vila Joiosa to perform this concert organised by the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Tíscar of the municipality. However, the suspension of the concert during the live performance, after 9 p.m., left both festival-goers and residents astonished.
"The minimum requirements were not met," stated the artist on stage regarding the technical needs. "I have been holding off signing the contract until the last moment because I needed the 'rider' to be the minimum I require with my team so that you can enjoy this concert and my voice."
With a bottle of water in hand, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses - for this evening concert near the market area of La Vila Joiosa where this fairground is organised - the artist continued to criticise the Brotherhood: "They're taking me for a fool."
"I've put up with a lot, and limits must be set," she continued, with Saturday night being the first time the artist decided to set hers and end the concert live. "Artists must be respected, and if not, they shouldn't hire us."
It was at this moment, after these words, that several attendees began to applaud Nuria Fergó in her defence of artists' rights. "I'm sorry Villajoyosa, I hope this can be resolved in the future if you want me to return, and if not, thank you for trying. But I'm setting the limits tonight."
Nuria Fergó was not the only one to speak out. Members of the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Tíscar also commented on the cancellation of her concert. First on their social media, with a brief post stating "we regret to inform" that the "anticipated" performance "despite being so announced, the artist decided not to perform tonight at the last minute."
Furthermore, the organisers detailed that the venue had nearly 3,000 people at the time of Nuria Fergó's concert cancellation. "After we did everything possible for her performance, we regret that it could not take place and apologise for the inconvenience caused."
Additionally, one of the members of this Brotherhood, Ángel Sánchez, appeared on the programme 'Y ahora Sonsoles' to give his version of events. The local resident acknowledged that the concert's suspension "left us quite confused," criticising Nuria Fergó for making the decision "when she gets on stage without talking to us."
"We have evidence that the equipment was what the artist had accepted," while also stating that if she had any issues, she could have spoken with the Brotherhood - "four hours ago, at five or six in the afternoon, when the technician was doing the sound checks - because our technician could have gone to her warehouse and resolved everything."
