Consum surpasses 500 own stores after opening a new supermarket in Torrevieja

With the new opening of the Torrevieja supermarket, as well as the one in Sueca, Consum reaches 500 own stores. These are two supermarkets that operated as Economy Cash and were acquired by the cooperative last year from Kuups Design International along with 7 other establishments. With these two new openings, the Cooperative adds 502 own stores to which more than 480 Charter franchises are added, the entity details in a statement.

The Torrevieja store, for its part, is located in the Torreta Florida shopping centre in the town, specifically at the intersection of Avenida Miguel Unamuno with Avenida Ramón del Valle Inclán. The centre has more than 1,300 m² of surface area and more than 240 parking spaces in a shared parking lot.

With this new opening, Consum adds 9 supermarkets in Torrevieja: 8 Consum (Zoa Street, Ricardo Lafuente Round, Habaneras Avenue, Valencian Courts Avenue, Diego Ramírez Avenue, Roentgen Avenue and the Punta Marina Shopping Centre) and one Charter, on Dénia Avenue.

As for the new supermarket in Sueca, it is located in the Sueca Parc commercial park, at KM 10 of the CV-515 road, with more than 1,400 m² of surface area and more than 590 parking spaces in a shared parking lot. It is the second Consum store that the Cooperative has in the town, which already had a centre in the urban core, specifically in the Ronda de Bernat Aliño.

As in previous operations, the cooperative has incorporated the entire staff of the 9 acquired centres, which amounts to 193 workers. In the case of the Sueca store, the team is made up of 32 people from Ribera Baixa while in the Torrevieja store, about 40 people from the town and neighbouring towns will work.

All the supermarkets that Consum bought last year will open their doors in the coming months. These are the 7 in the Valencian Community: Massanasa - which opened at the end of May -, the two in Sueca and Torrevieja - which open tomorrow -, Aldaia, Alaquàs, Gandía and Xàtiva; the one in Amposta, in Catalonia, and the one in Caravaca de la Cruz, in the Region of Murcia.

According to the cooperative's forecast for this year, it will add 18 more Consum centres to its network. In addition to the 6 acquired in the Valencian Community, Catalonia will also add 6 centres: Mataró - which opened on March 27 -, Lleida, Amposta, Terrassa, Olot and Vilanova i la Geltrú. In the Region of Murcia, 3 more will open: 1 in Caravaca de la Cruz, 1 in Cartagena and another store in the city of Murcia. In Andalusia, two new stores will open, both in the province of Almería, one in the capital and another in Albox. Currently, Consum's commercial network has more than 980 establishments, more than 500 own and more than 480 Charter, in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Region of Murcia, Andalusia and Aragon.

During 2024, the cooperative created 653 new jobs, reaching a workforce of 21,869 workers. Worker members are owners, so they are involved in management and share the profits. In 2024, 105.4 million euros were distributed: 65.5 million euros, corresponding to the distribution of cooperative results and 39.9 million euros, to incentive bonuses.
