The DGT Confirms That Renewing Your Driver's License Will Be Free If You Meet This Requirement

Obtaining a driver's license for the first time is often a significant challenge. Having this document can be crucial for individuals, whether they need their vehicle for work or their job depends on it, such as taxi, bus, and truck drivers. Therefore, keeping it up to date becomes essential for many, as well as renewing it. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) emphasizes the importance of avoiding expiration since it is illegal to drive with an expired license.

To renew the license, no exam is required; it can be renewed up to three months in advance and even after it has expired. Generally, the renewal process is straightforward and involves visiting a medical examination center, paying the traffic fee, and covering the cost of the medical examination.

The cost to renew a driver's license (excluding the price of the medical examination) is 24.58 euros. The validity period for AM, A1, A2, A, and B licenses, as well as Driving Licenses, is ten years, except for those aged 65 and over, whose period is reduced to five years. For types C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED, and ED1 licenses, the duration is five years and three years for those aged 65 and over. These periods may change if the individual has any medical condition that could affect their driving at any point.

Now, for individuals who are renewing their license and are 70 years old or older, the renewal will be free since the DGT exempts them from paying the fee. However, they will still need to cover the cost of the medical examination. Once the renewal is successfully completed, the center will issue a provisional permit that allows driving until the definitive one arrives, which usually takes approximately a month and a half.
