Ernst of Hanover is once again making headlines. This time, it's not due to any notorious scandal, as those days seem to be behind him, especially after solidifying his relationship with artist Claudia Stilianopoulos, daughter of Pitita Ridruejo. Instead, it's his health that is drawing attention. Despite residing in Madrid for years, the German press has sounded the alarm after seeing recent images of the controversial prince hunched over and using a walker. Ernst of Hanover continues to suffer the aftereffects of a hip operation he underwent last December at the Ruber Clinic in Madrid, which has abruptly halted his active lifestyle.
Although it was a routine operation, after which most patients can walk normally within six to eight weeks, the aristocrat experienced complications, necessitating the continued use of a walker in his daily life. Following an initial operation in November 2024 that did not yield the desired results, he opted for another surgery. The rehabilitation was initially satisfactory, but his progress became increasingly limited. More than three months later, uncertainty remains about when he will fully recover.
This situation adds to the long medical history of the 71-year-old aristocrat. In 2005, he was placed in an induced coma due to pancreatic issues, preventing him from attending his father-in-law Prince Rainier's funeral. After his recovery, he claimed to have changed his unhealthy lifestyle. Subsequently, he underwent knee surgery and an emergency procedure to remove an ulcer. Five years ago, he was successfully treated for a tumour.
In 2020, he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic following an incident at his Grünau country house. According to police reports, the Austrian prince sought help, claiming someone wanted to kill him. When officers arrived at his residence, Ernst of Hanover was violent and aggressive towards them.
Now, in his new life in Madrid, where his son Christian and Sassa de Osma also reside, Prince Ernst acts as a loving grandfather to the couple's children and seems to stay out of the media spotlight, though not entirely. A few months ago, news broke of an incident involving the aristocrat at a restaurant, which included throwing glasses and plates. Although his partner Claudia denied it, Ernst of Hanover's notorious reputation lent credibility to the restaurant owner's account.
