Compromís will propose a reform to amend the statute of former presidents of the Generalitat Valenciana to "prevent them from receiving €75,000 annually for 15 years" upon joining the Consell Jurídic Consultiu (CJC), a measure that "nobody on the street understands."
The law stipulates that former presidents will be ex officio members of the CJC for 15 years if they have served a full legislative term. In other cases, they will be members for a period equal to their time in office, with a minimum of two years.
"When people ask why Mazón does not resign, we have three answers: first, because he wants to remain immune from prosecution and keep that privilege; second, to continue awarding contracts without competition; and third, because he wants to secure those €75,000 and remain in the Consell Jurídic Consultiu after stepping down as president," explained Compromís spokesperson Joan Baldoví at Les Corts on Monday.
To prevent this situation, the coalition is working on a proposal to reform the statute of former presidents, which will include that they "cannot go" to the CJC after serving as head of the Consell. "In other words, Mr. Mazón, whether he completes the term or not, will not be able to join the Consell Jurídic Consultiu and receive those €75,000," he exemplified.
According to Baldoví, it is a "reasonable" measure that is "on the street," because the public "does not understand why Mazón should go" to this body "and receive those €75,000 for 15 years." "We are working on this and other proposals," advanced the spokesperson, who expressed hope that this proposal will receive "the support of all political groups to be approved in the future."
The reform of the law, specified the Compromís spokesperson, would be "not only" for Mazón's case but also "for all future former presidents, so they do not go to the Consell Jurídic Consultiu and cannot receive these €75,000 for 15 years."
It would be, therefore, "in any case" to ensure that "no former president of the Generalitat enters the CJC" and, for this reason, that "they do not have the privilege of receiving those €75,000 a month over 15 years." "It is something that is not present in many parliaments, but in an absolute minority," he justified.
To approve this amendment, Compromís needs to gather the support of three-fifths of the Valencian chamber. "The PP would also have to vote, and we will see if they agree with this reduction they talk about in public spending," Baldoví hinted.
At this point, he took the opportunity to criticize that Carlos Mazón "has never had a salary unrelated to public positions." "Therefore, it is irrelevant whether he is in the CJC or not," he pointed out, while also stating that he does not know "what merits" the current president has to be part of this body. "It is a debate that is on the street," he insisted.
