Compromís in the Alicante City Council will demand "political accountability" from Mayor Luis Barcala and the councillors for Urban Planning and Security, Rocío Gómez and Julio Calero, following the Civil Guard's investigation of 14 men, six women, and a legal entity for crimes related to land use and urban planning concerning illegal constructions on protected land in Alicante, as well as violations of workers' rights.

In a statement, the spokesperson for Compromís denounces that "once again, the shadow of urban corruption taints the Alicante City Council, and once again, under the mandate of the Popular Party." In light of this situation, "just as the residents do," he accuses Barcala's government team of "inaction," for not having acted diligently. "If they have had complaints for months, why have they not acted on dozens of complaints from residents who reported this massive speculation affecting rural areas, with illegal settlements in flood-prone zones?" he questions.

The Urban Planning Department of the Alicante City Council has already processed the first decrees to halt construction in these irregular settlements in flood-prone areas, as communicated by the government team in December. They have also requested the Valencian Agency for Territorial Protection (AVPT) to prioritize actions in flood-risk areas. This agency, under the Ministry of Territory, has issued 40 reports for illegal constructions in flood-prone areas.

Urban Planning already notified the first decree to halt illegal works in La Cañada del Fenollar in December, according to municipal sources. Currently, there are 40 open cases in Urban Planning for such infractions, of which 15 pertain to land classified as a floodplain. For all of them, the City Council will issue the corresponding decrees to halt construction, as indicated by the government team.

Mas emphasizes that, "given how dangerous it is, the Civil Guard had to intervene and take control of the situation due to the magnitude of this alleged urban corruption case."

The coalition's spokesperson states that "Compromís was clear" and, not trusting the City Council, they inquired about the matter with the Ministry for Ecological Transition through a series of parliamentary questions by Senator Enric Morera.

"We are going to demand political accountability from both Luis Barcala and the councillor for Urban Planning, Rocío Gómez, and the head of Security, Julio Calero, because he is the president of the district board of the rural areas and has known about this situation for months without taking action," he states, and announces that they will request the convening of an extraordinary board meeting for the rural areas, district board 5.
