Compromís has denounced this Tuesday that the Popular Party has turned the city of Alicante, the second largest population centre in Valencia, into 'the paradigm of poor management and abandonment of social action. Barcala, Camarero, and Mazón are united in their antisocial action to dismantle inclusive public services.'
The spokesperson for Social Services of Compromís in Les Corts, Nathalie Torres, explained that Councillor Camarero and Mayor Barcala 'have done nothing to consolidate a structure of care for the most needy citizens by letting the so-called contract-program die, an administrative tool that guaranteed funding for social action to local Valencian entities for four years and municipalised the first line of social action.'

'What is happening in Alicante is the clear exemplification of the dismantling of public social services. Municipalities and social services have been warning since November 2023 about the end of the contract-program,' revealed the deputy, referring to the minutes of meetings held in November 2023 and 2024 at the Territorial Directorate of the province of Alicante. 'By June 2024, the council should have sent instructions for renewal and has not reacted until a month ago. They do not believe in social investment; for Susana Camarero, it is just an expense,' Torres noted, who has registered a non-legislative proposal in Les Corts for the urgent reinforcement of social care services.
Torres considered that many smaller municipalities have indeed had the will to consolidate the Valencian public services access law and have consolidated professional structures in these four years of the contract-program duration. 'Banyeres de Mariola, a city of barely 7,000 inhabitants and governed by Compromís since 2015, has used the contract-program to increase team positions by 50% and establish almost the entire workforce,' Torres pointed out as an example contrary to Alicante.
The spokesperson in the Alicante City Council, Rafa Mas, stated that the dismissal of 80 percent of the social workers is already causing calculations to see Dependency rights recognised 'exceed the legal maximum established by law.'
'The contract-program was created to annul annual subsidies to municipalities and to have a five-year plan for the social action of the Administration, streamlining procedures and consolidating workforces to attend to the social rights of people. Compromís, which promoted it, thus responded to a social and sector demand to reinforce a social shield and guarantee access to citizens' rights where they go to seek help, which is at the doors of the Town Halls,' he noted.
'Alicante is one of the few municipalities that has done nothing to alleviate this situation. Currently, we exceed the nine months established as the maximum for a person to have their right to aid recognised to a wait of at least a year and a half. The situation is alarming because they have not only destroyed the work teams, but they also stop directly attending to people,' Mas criticised, pointing out that 'there is no longer a mental health service, nor legal service, and the department's programs such as child care are neglected.'
