The Spanish Government plans to commence the comprehensive renovation of the railway line connecting Alcoi and Xàtiva at the end of this March. This undertaking will represent the most significant modernisation of the infrastructure since its construction nearly 120 years ago, with a budget of €160 million. The project aims to enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and improve service reliability.
The works, to be executed by Adif, will begin at the end of March 2025 and include the complete renewal of the track, adaptation of tunnels and overpasses, improvement of stations and platforms, as well as the installation of a modern railway telecommunications system.
The works are expected to extend until the end of 2026, during which an alternative transport plan has been designed to ensure mobility between Xàtiva and Alcoi with more than 11,500 scheduled bus services.
To expedite execution and minimise inconvenience, it has been decided to suspend railway traffic across the entire line until the end of 2026, allowing for concentrated work and reduced timelines. The comprehensive renovation of the infrastructure will ensure a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable railway service, contributing to improved mobility in the interior regions of the Valencian Community.
During the construction period, Renfe has arranged an alternative transport plan with 126 weekly bus services between Xàtiva and Alcoi, while the section between València Nord and Xàtiva will continue to be serviced by train. This measure ensures the connectivity of affected municipalities and maintains the offer of Medium Distance services.
Toni Francés
Mayor of Alcoi
The Mayor of Alcoi, Toni Francés, has highlighted the importance of this action for the integration of the central regions: “It will improve the communication of the regions surrounding Alcoi and the connection with Xàtiva, which will be an AVE station and a very important communication hub for l'Alcoià and El Comtat. We are going to have the train that the people of Alcoi and all the inhabitants of the region deserve.”
Francés added that this investment will not only improve railway connectivity but also boost the economic and social development of the area: “A modern and efficient railway transport is essential to foster the economic growth of our regions. This renovation will allow our citizens to have better mobility options for work, study, and enjoy a better quality of life. It will also be an opportunity to enhance tourism and facilitate connection with other major cities in the Valencian Community and Spain.”
