Climate change is an undeniable reality, according to scientific data. In recent years, extreme weather events such as droughts and floods and torrential rains have become more frequent and prolonged in the European Union. If this situation is not addressed, by 2050, water scarcity will affect 17% of the EU population and cause losses of 12.2 billion euros annually.
For instance, the year 2024 ended as the warmest in the Valencian Community since at least 1950, according to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The ten warmest years in the region are all from the 21st century, nine of which are from 2014 onwards, with 2006 being the tenth. The warmest year of the 20th century was 1994, ranking eleventh in the series. The three warmest years are the last three.

In response to this situation, the European Union has begun to take measures through innovation programs to tackle a new era, literally speaking, with prolonged droughts followed by seasons of torrential rains. This is the Rains program, whose mission over the next four years will be to enhance agriculture's resilience to water scarcity by demonstrating ten solutions (practices, technologies, and irrigation tools).

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) is participating in this international project with an innovative system of compost bricks made from sewage sludge and compost for agricultural soil fertilization. Through combined uses of water and fertilizers, "it will improve the water retention capacity of soils and thus reduce the impact of floods on our lands and throughout Europe," explains Raúl Moral, director of the Agro-Food and Environmental Research and Innovation Institute (Ciagro).
In this European project, UMH collaborates with the private water court of Guardamar del Segura. This locality will be a key validation point for all the solutions provided.
The European Union's Rains initiative involves 16 institutions from six countries, with a total budget of nearly five million euros.
