Nobody is ever satisfied with the weather, nor does the cold affect everyone equally. The arrival of a mass of frigid air from northern Europe has caused temperatures in Alicante to plummet, with sub-zero lows and frosts in the province's interior. This polar cold snap coincided with the start of the sales period after an almost spring-like Christmas. This has not gone unnoticed by Alicante's retailers, especially in the textile sector, who see the 'chill' as an opportunity to boost the sales campaign.
Now, more than ever, is the time to renew those coats many Alicante residents had stored away due to the good weather, only to find they have shrunk. The circumstances are generating optimism in Alicante's commercial sector as they look forward to this second weekend of promotions: "It's true that the initial period is always limited, but we can see more general movement and things are picking up," says Vicente Armengol, president of the Colectivo por Alicante.

The Alicante retail sector is experiencing an "interesting" moment, explains the veteran owner of Filant la Tardor, as traditional shops attract not only regular customers but also many visitors. "Now we have a flat period of cruises, but the Christmas campaign was especially good due to the influx of visitors to the city," says Armengol.
In fact, sales have increased in the two weeks between Christmas and the Three Kings, the holiday period, precisely because of the arrival of many tourists in Alicante with high purchasing power.
These visitors are the occasional ones from other parts of the province. But, especially in recent years, "the arrival of foreign tourists arriving via the airport has been very noticeable." Armengol himself, owner of a ceremonial clothing store, recounts cases such as "a Norwegian family who had a wedding in their country and bought four suits in one day."
In this regard, the president of Alicante's merchants and a member of the Chamber of Commerce highlights "the importance not only of the expansion of Alicante-Elche airport, but also of having the second runway to maintain this capacity for visitor arrivals."
