Walking from the centre of Alicante to the end of San Juan beach will soon be possible. The City Council is progressing with efforts to achieve a continuous promenade that connects the entire coastline of the city, a total of 14 kilometres. Mayor Luis Barcala has emphasised that the new city model, as outlined in the new General Plan, aims for "the regeneration of the waterfront, the removal of barriers, and the modification of incompatible uses."

The ultimate goal is a grand coastal walkway connecting the entire coast from Urbanova to San Juan beach, spanning over 20 kilometres, making it the longest in Europe. This year, the council is executing improvement works focused particularly on the northern maritime strip of the city. These include the renovation of Niza Avenue, the redevelopment of La Almadraba, and the new esplanade of Finca Adoc. To begin the southern zone, the execution of the Torrellano Bypass by the Central Government is necessary to allow the removal of the railway tracks from the San Gabriel coast.

These works are valued at 25 million euros, stretching from the Paseo de los Mártires de la Libertad to the last section of Niza Avenue. According to the mayor, this final action "will allow the people of Alicante to finally enjoy a completely renovated promenade in front of San Juan beach, with a renewed and modern image."

Barcala has visited the works, which are in full swing, accompanied by local residents, business owners from Niza Avenue, and representatives from the contracting company Vías y Construcciones S.A., as well as the councillors for Urban Planning, Rocío Gómez, and Commerce, Lidia López.

"These projects will continue in the new planning framework to be designed within the General Structural Plan and the Detailed Planning Plan, until we achieve our goal of having a linear coastal walkway covering the entire municipal coastal strip," he added.

The 'Alicante 4D' city model, which "we will outline in the General Plan," Barcala recalled, "reflects our plans to conduct a detailed analysis of the situation and potential of each coastal fragment and define a unified and consensual project, decisively committed to the regeneration of the coastal front, contemplating the removal of barriers and modification of incompatible uses."

Remodelling of Niza Avenue

The primary aim of this initiative is to provide a unified design for the promenade and enhance the comfort of its numerous users. It is the last section of the promenade that remained to be redeveloped and conditioned. The contractor for the remodelling project of Niza Avenue, in the section between Ireland Street and the boundary with El Campello, is Vías y Construcciones, S.A., which will carry out the works for 3.9 million euros with a completion period of nine months.

Meeting with the residents

To minimise the impact of the works on the people of Alicante, tourists, residents, and local business owners, the works commenced after the peak beach season. The Urban Planning Councillor, Rocío Gómez, met with the promenade's business owners and hoteliers before the start of the works to explain their development and facilitate contact with the municipal project director, ensuring they stay informed and can raise any concerns.

To minimise the impact of the works on the people of Alicante, tourists, residents, and local business owners, the works commenced after the peak beach season.

The works include the renewal of the deteriorated pedestrian pavement and its image, introducing new seating and recreational areas with vegetation, which will also improve beach accessibility.

The comprehensive intervention will include actions on the pavement, the wall separating the promenade from the beach, and the existing furniture. Additionally, quality elements will be incorporated to modernise this space, in line with the rehabilitation carried out in the first phase.

Regarding accessibility, the project establishes a single level to facilitate runoff towards the beach sand, eliminating unnecessary drains. The promenade's palm trees will be maintained, and work will also be done to improve and condition the tree pits, in addition to incorporating more vegetation.

In parallel with the redevelopment works of the last section of the promenade, the project to install four sports modules is planned. Specifically, four prefabricated locker room modules with a minimum capacity of six people and a maximum of 12 people, equipped with toilets and showers, will be installed, along with a storage module for sports equipment, including nautical items, kayaks, SUPs, oars, and general beach sports equipment.

Additionally, an information office and shaded areas for sports activities will be set up. These will be located in an area currently used for parking, where the summer craft market was previously located before its relocation to the beginning of the promenade.
