The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Miteco), through the Directorate General of the Coast and the Sea, has completed the new breakwater works at Alicante's Postiguet Beach. The project, part of a strategy to protect and regenerate the Alicante coastline, involved an investment of 653,400 euros and was finished "two months ahead of schedule," according to Alicante's Government Subdelegate, Juan Antonio Nieves.

The new infrastructure, replacing the old breakwater built in 1993, has increased the sandy area of the beach by between 205 and 240 square metres (m2) to "ensure" its long-term stability and "curb" sediment loss.

Additionally, the breakwater's design, featuring an L-shape extending 178 metres out to sea, was conceived "to enhance the natural behaviour of the sandy area and ensure its function as a defence for the Cocó promenade," according to a statement from the Government Subdelegation in Alicante.

In this regard, Nieves expressed his "satisfaction" on Tuesday with the completion of the works: "It represents a significant step forward in ensuring the beach's stability, improving water quality, and protecting such an iconic urban environment as Postiguet. Alicante gains in safety, sustainability, and quality of life."

Balancing Protection and Enjoyment

Nieves also highlighted that "this action responds to a historic demand and demonstrates the Government's firm commitment to coastal protection and the improvement of public spaces." He added: "We are particularly pleased to have met the scheduled deadlines, having finished two months ahead of schedule, and to have worked hand in hand with technicians and the contracting company to ensure the project is completed in the best conditions," he added.

"We continue to work with rigour and planning to adapt our beaches to the context of climate change while simultaneously improving their public use. This action is an example of how environmental protection can be balanced with enhancing public enjoyment," the subdelegate concluded.
