A mere four days after the accident between two trucks on the AP-7 near the town of l'Alfàs del Pi caused a complete closure of the expressway towards Valencia for much of Monday, resulting in significant traffic jams across the Marina Baixa, a new incident late Thursday morning has led to the closure, this time of the right lane (again towards Valencia) of the former motorway at the height of Benidorm.
The cause of this situation was the impact of a crane truck against the bridge of the motorway itself at its intersection with Juan Pablo II Avenue in the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca. According to initial reports, the vehicle, which was travelling along that city road, did so with the crane's boom extended, and it was this element that struck the elevated infrastructure.
In addition to the partial restriction of traffic on the expressway, according to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), the Benidorm City Council has also decided to completely close Juan Pablo II Avenue.
At the scene of the accident, in addition to several units of the Benidorm Local Police and Civil Guard; Firefighters; Road personnel and the Society for Digital Transformation Projects, the first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the councillor for Mobility, Francis Muñoz, were also mobilised.
Both have recommended that, while the closure continues and safe passage through that point can be ensured, drivers wishing to access the tourist capital should do so via alternative routes.
