Violence erupted once again among football fans this morning, disturbing the peace in the Santuario neighbourhood of Córdoba. The Moreal square became the scene of a fierce clash between Córdoba and Almería ultras, leaving a trail of destruction and alarm just hours before the match at El Arcángel stadium.

The confrontation broke out around 11:00 am when residents alerted the 112 Andalucía Emergency Coordination Centre about a violent altercation in the area. According to witnesses, groups of fans began hurling chairs, tables, bottles, and stones taken from nearby terraces, unleashing chaos in a square frequented by supporters on match days.

An Incident Under Investigation

The causes of the conflict remain unclear, and authorities are investigating whether it was a planned confrontation or a spontaneous incident. What is evident is that this event disrupts the relative calm that had characterised recent encounters between both fanbases, despite the intense regional rivalry. In fact, gatherings for camaraderie between fans of both teams had been planned.

Officers from the National Police's Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR), already deployed in the city as part of the match's security operation, immediately arrived at the scene. The swift intervention, in collaboration with Local Police officers, managed to control the situation before it escalated further.

A Morning of Disturbances

Residents of the neighbourhood described the scene as chaotic, with shouting and running back and forth across the square. Almería and Córdoba fans exchanged insults and blunt objects, creating an atmosphere of tension and danger in an area usually known for its tranquillity.

This episode, beyond the material damage, reignites the debate on football violence and the necessary measures to prevent such situations.

The match between Córdoba and Almería, scheduled for this afternoon at El Arcángel, is one of the region's most fiercely contested derbies. Despite the usual security deployment for such high-stakes matches, incidents like this morning's highlight the challenge of curbing the violent behaviour of certain fan groups.

For now, local authorities have declared the situation "under control," although it is expected that security operations around the stadium will be reinforced ahead of the match. Meanwhile, residents of the Santuario neighbourhood are trying to return to normality after a morning marked by fear and destruction.

This incident, beyond the sporting rivalry, underscores the urgent need to address the issue of football violence from a more comprehensive perspective, involving both security measures and efforts to promote respect and coexistence in the sport.
