The Civil Guard rescued a swimmer on Tuesday who was found unconscious and adrift in a dangerous current area at La Mata Beach in Torrevieja. The 71-year-old man was assisted and stabilised until medical services arrived, who then transported him to the hospital where he is still recovering.
Hours before the rescue, a septuagenarian drowned at Cura Beach, five kilometres from where the officers saved the assisted man, preventing the number of fatalities during the bathing season in Alicante province from increasing to three.
The incident occurred at 5:15 p.m. when a possible drowning alert was received near Avenida de los Europeos. Upon arrival, the officers observed from an elevated point, using binoculars, a man floating face up about 100 metres from the shore. The sea conditions were very unfavourable, known for its strong currents.

Faced with the need for swift action, the officers did not hesitate to remove their uniforms and jump into the water, reaching the man who remained unconscious, and managed to bring him to the shore. During the rescue, they began resuscitation manoeuvres in the sea. Minutes later, the victim regained consciousness and embraced the officers, who managed to bring him to the shore where they continued to stabilise him, now with the support of medical personnel from the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (Samu).
Finally, the man was transported in stable condition to the University Hospital of Torrevieja for medical evaluation, where he continues his recovery.
The operation also involved officers from the Torrevieja Local Police, who assisted in managing the environment and safeguarding the equipment of the intervening officers.
