Christmas brings much to celebrate for a family from the North Zone of Alicante who, thanks to the swift action of the National Police, managed to save their six-month-old baby's life. The parents and their child were at home when the infant began showing signs of breathing difficulty. They decided to call 091, and the dispatch centre sent an urgent patrol alert.

When the officers arrived at the residence, they found the newborn unresponsive, with blue lips, showing no signs of reaction and having difficulty breathing. One of the officers quickly took the baby, turned him over on one of his forearms, and applied the Heimlich manoeuvre.

Within seconds, the infant began to breathe normally, cry, and regain his usual colour, as the airways had been cleared thanks to the manoeuvre.

How to Act When a Baby is Choking

The Heimlich manoeuvre is a quick first aid procedure to treat choking due to upper airway obstruction. It involves placing the baby face down on your forearm so that the baby's head is lower than his chest. Hold the head in the palm of your hand, over your thigh. Do not cover the baby's mouth or twist his neck. Use the palm of your other hand to give up to 5 back blows between the shoulder blades.

The coordination and swift action during the resuscitation manoeuvres were crucial in saving his life. The officers, while waiting for the arrival of the Samur, kept stimulating the baby to keep him stable.

After a few minutes with the arrival of the Samur, they conducted an initial examination of the baby, finding that he had nearly 39 degrees of fever, gas, and mucus obstruction, so he was taken with his mother to the General Hospital of Alicante, where he remained under observation for a few hours until doctors ensured his life was not in danger.

Constant Training to Save Lives

The National Police maintain constant training throughout their professional careers, offering courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of defibrillators, and other first aid techniques like the Heimlich manoeuvre. These skills are of great interest both professionally and personally, providing the necessary knowledge to apply them in emergencies whenever required, whether on duty or not.
