On Friday morning, a homeless man miraculously survived in Alicante. The man, who was sleeping in a garbage container in the city centre, accidentally fell into the truck collecting waste and narrowly avoided being crushed. Firefighters managed to rescue him and bring him to safety.
The incident occurred on Friday morning on the central Calderón de la Barca street in Alicante, just a few metres from the Central Market.
The waste collection service was on its usual round, hooking containers with a mechanical arm to deposit them inside and crush them on the way to the landfill.
It is unclear whether it was the truck driver or the vehicle's alert systems that noticed something unusual was happening.
The surprise was enormous when it was discovered that there was a person inside the truck, prompting the halt of waste compaction and a call to the Local Police and Firefighters.
Members of the Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Service (Speis) of the Alicante City Council arrived at the scene while the Local Police blocked the road.
A truck with a mechanical ladder reached the top of the waste transport, and a firefighter managed to reach the man and pull him out from the top without, apparently, any major physical injuries.
The scene surprised many passers-by on this early Friday morning as they walked along such a popular street. The deployment of personnel also drew attention to this strange incident, which ultimately had a happy ending for everyone involved.
