Local police in Rojales (Alicante) have rescued two children from inside cars on separate days after their parents forgot the keys to open them. Officers had to break the windows of the vehicles, according to a statement from the Town Hall.
Specifically, one of the incidents occurred around 6 p.m. on February 3rd, when the local police received a call from a resident alerting them that a child was inside a car and the father was unable to open it.
A patrol arrived at the scene and, after assessing the situation, broke the car window to open it and remove the child. The operation was carried out after analysing the situation with minimal risk to the child's life, breaking the window furthest away and ensuring no glass would harm the child.
On another occasion, on February 10th, around 1:30 p.m., under similar circumstances, a local resident alerted the police that a child was trapped in a car near the health centre after the father accidentally locked the vehicle.
As in the first instance, the patrol broke one of the car windows to open it and rescue the child trapped inside.
The local police in Rojales remind that it is not advisable to leave any child inside a vehicle, as it could be considered child abandonment.
They also add that, although these two situations had a "happy ending," they remind that other similar cases have not ended well, with incidents of vehicle thefts or robberies with children inside.
They further emphasize that it is "very important," in case of urgent need, to lower or leave open a window "enough" if the keys are inside the car, even if the engine is running, to avoid such incidents, whether due to oversight or mechanical failure. However, they insist, "it is advisable to always supervise and protect children."
In this regard, the Security Councillor of Rojales, Antonio López, has called on all citizens to "cooperate by alerting officers" if they detect any "anomalous and risky situation," to "prevent fatal outcomes." "We greatly appreciate the alert from these residents," he added.
