Young people are often said not to read, yet they spend around 2.8 billion euros on books. These are not just any books, nor are they classics or literary supplement figures. They seek those signed by fellow young people they meet in 'book tokers' forums and networks, followers of the 'book tok' genre. Now, these fans gather at an annual festival called Crush Fest, featuring over thirty of their authors. The age limit is 35, but most are well below, between 15 and 20 years old. Headliners confirmed for March 15 and 16 include Mercedes Ron, Inma Rubiales, Kiersten White, Carrie Leighton, Erin Doom, Kristina Moning, Hannah Nicole Maehrer, and Brynne Weaver. Among the 36 confirmed authors, only two are male.

The genre is called 'young adult' because it is not children's literature. It doesn't quite fit the juvenile category either. Some of its works originate from platforms like Wattpad, where they gain initial popularity. Paper publishers pick up some of these successes and place them in bookstores, while others remain in the digital space. Some titles have transitioned from mobile screens to slightly larger ones, becoming series or films, such as 'Bridgerton' or 'Save Me'.

The protagonists of these stories are no older than 25, like their readers, and they embody adventures of all kinds, such as first love, a youthful mystery, or pure fantasy. The theme of transitioning from childhood to adulthood serves as the genre's backbone, with all its complexities, from new responsibilities to sexuality.

Fairy Tale

Last year's edition, the first held in Spain, saw 3,000 attendees, according to Bookish, a company specializing in the genre. This year, they have tripled the capacity and expect 8,000 attendees. The entry is not free; tickets cost over 40 euros. This is an affordable price for a generation of bibliophiles who buy an average of three books a month, each costing around 20 euros. In Spain, they represent 27% of the market, say the organizers, who guarantee an atmosphere of diversity and respect.

The hallmark of the 2025 celebration will be fairy tales. Like a Comic-Con, 'cosplay' or dressing up is encouraged. The event lasts two days, featuring book signings, panel discussions, book presentations, literary 'match' sessions (pairing like-minded readers, akin to a date), live music and podcasts, contests, and workshops spread throughout the University of Barcelona building, where it is held. A literary phenomenon to follow.
