Horse Technologies has signed an agreement to supply engines for the 2026 Caterham Academy series. The Caterham Academy is a unique championship exclusively for novice drivers. Established in 1995, its aim is to introduce anyone to the world of motorsport and make it possible for them to fulfil their dream of becoming a racing driver. Today, the series is considered one of the most successful in Britain, with over 1,400 drivers having competed in it.
The 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder turbo engine "HR13" will power the vehicles competing in the 2026 Academy Championship. Featuring direct injection technology, the high-performance petrol engine with a customised tune will be capable of delivering a maximum power of 130 hp (132 hp) and a peak torque of 176 Nm at 5,150 rpm.
The HR13 uses a delta-shaped cylinder head to save mass and space, lower the centre of gravity, and improve the engine's thermal management. The exhaust manifolds are integrated directly into the cylinder head for a quicker turbo response and exceptional low-end torque delivery. The HR13 is manufactured at Horse Technologies' plant in Valladolid, Spain.
Participants purchase a self-assembly, configurable, and street-legal Caterham Seven designed specifically for the Academy. The car is built with all racing safety specifications but remains legal for road use. The car's specification is deliberately chosen (e.g., open differential, low-grip tyres) to help drivers learn fundamental car control skills.
Backed by the Caterham factory, this competition is specifically designed as an entry point into motorsport for complete beginners. It is often described as the most factory-supported racing championship in Europe.
Caterham (Caterham Cars Ltd) has been manufacturing lightweight two-seater sports cars since 1973, when Graham Nearn acquired the tools, designs, and exclusive rights to the Seven from Lotus founder Colin Chapman.
In homage to Chapman, Caterham's current philosophy continues to place driving experience and fun at the heart of everything it does. It is committed to offering a personalised experience for each customer and provides a wide range of options to help customers create a car that perfectly suits their tastes and driving preferences, both for the road and the track.
The British manufacturer produces its exclusive cars solely in the United Kingdom. Currently, Caterham is headquartered in Dartford, Kent, where it has been manufacturing both assembled and kit cars since 1987.
The fundamental principle is that all participants are genuine beginners with no prior racing experience. This ensures a level playing field where everyone learns together.
The series offers a comprehensive package that takes participants through all the necessary steps to become a racing driver and compete in their first championship.
Caterham provides on-track technical support throughout the season, with qualified technicians available to assist drivers with their cars. Professional support from external teams is generally not allowed to keep the focus on driver development.
