Casa Mediterráneo, in collaboration with the Embassy of Croatia in Spain, will inaugurate the photographic exhibition 'Lighthouses of Croatia' next Monday, 5th May at 12:30 PM. The exhibition invites visitors to visually explore the history, culture, and maritime heritage of Croatia through 20 striking images of lighthouses scattered along the Adriatic coast.
The event will be attended by the Croatian Ambassador to Spain, Nives Malenica, who will accompany the Director General of Casa Mediterráneo, Andrés Perelló.
The 20 lighthouses featured in this exhibition are a small sample of the 48 active lighthouses that watch over Croatian waters. The exhibition is a selection of images taken by 60 photographers who have masterfully captured the lights, landscapes, textures, and colours of the Adriatic, one of the clearest seas in the Mediterranean.
Croatian lighthouses, built between 1818 and 1899, are a testament to a maritime and human epic. Several have been restored and converted into tourist accommodations, offering new lives to these century-old towers.
This exhibition is not only a visual journey but also a call to preserve these coastal monuments that are part of Europe's cultural heritage, whose beauty and symbolism continue to guide—both literally and metaphorically—those who approach the coast.
Croatia, with over a thousand islands and nearly 6,000 kilometres of coastline, represents a nation open to the sea, with a maritime history deeply rooted. Encompassing three-quarters of the Adriatic coastline, the country has been home to sailors, traders, and explorers for centuries.
The lighthouse has been a safe guide for navigators and a source of inspiration for solitary imagination. The history of these steadfast guardians of the sea is closely linked to the evolution of navigation, from ancient watchtowers and the mythical Lighthouse of Alexandria to modern automated and remotely controlled lighthouses.
