Humanity may not have been born in the Mediterranean, but it certainly grew around the 'Mare Nostrum', as the Romans called it. The great civilizations, commercial exchange, and control of maritime routes marked the rise of modern Europe, from the Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans. Around it, not only did empires and great cities emerge; economic prosperity, culture, and a vast heritage that belongs to all also flourished.
In an effort to recap and on the occasion of the International Day of World Heritage, Casa Mediterráneo launches an interactive map on its website showcasing the cultural and natural assets of the Mediterranean region declared World Heritage by UNESCO. This project, illustrated by renowned artist José Malagón, is a visual and educational tool aimed at facilitating the exploration and appreciation of the treasures that make up the common heritage of the Mediterranean.
The interactive map, which currently includes an initial selection of 30 notable heritage sites, will be expanded and developed over the coming months to encompass more than 300 officially recognized sites in the Mediterranean region. Among the places already included are the Palm Grove of Elche, the Acropolis of Athens, Petra in Jordan, the pyramids of Egypt, and the historic centre of Dubrovnik in Croatia.
"With this map, designed with the art of José Malagón, we aim to promote not only the knowledge of these cultural assets but also their preservation," stated Andrés Perelló, Director General of Casa Mediterráneo. "Each site represented on the map symbolizes a part of the historical and cultural legacy that connects the different Mediterranean communities."
Each highlighted location on the map will feature informative descriptions, photographs, and key data about its history and significance, making this resource an educational opportunity for the general public, as well as a valuable tool for students and researchers.
With the launch of this project on the International Day of World Heritage, Casa Mediterráneo reaffirms its commitment to the dissemination and conservation of the Mediterranean's cultural and natural heritage, fostering appreciation for the shared legacy of its peoples.
Access the Interactive Map: The interactive map, illustrated by José Malagón, is available for free on the Casa Mediterráneo website (https://casa-mediterraneo.es/inicio/conoce-el-mediterraneo/). Users will be able to see the project's progress as new sites are added until all World Heritage sites in the region are covered.
