Casa Mediterráneo is hosting a meeting organised by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Aecid) in collaboration with the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies. This event, taking place from January 21 to 23, will bring together key partners of Spanish Cooperation in Arab countries within the framework of the regional programme Masar al'an, officially presented on May 20 at Casa Árabe, Madrid.
The seminar will be inaugurated by Andrés Perelló, Director General of Casa Mediterráneo, and Antón Leis, Director of Aecid, featuring participation from ministerial representatives of Egypt, Mauritania, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Morocco, and Tunisia. Additionally, Elisabetta Necco, Director of the Civil Society Unit of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation, will discuss the crucial role of civil society in the sustainable development of Mediterranean Arab countries.
For the first time, the event will include participation from representatives of Spanish decentralised cooperation, including delegates from autonomous communities and local governments. Attendees will include the Director General of Inclusion and Development Cooperation of the Generalitat Valenciana, a technical representative from the Alicante City Council, and representatives from Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Extremadura, Navarra, and the city councils of Barcelona and Madrid. This participation will expand opportunities for direct cooperation between Spanish local administrations and Arab regional actors, allowing for the sharing of experiences and exploration of synergies within the Masar al'an programme framework.
Masar al'an aims to promote sustainable development in the Arab world through international cooperation, with a special focus on employment, ecological transition, gender equality, and youth empowerment. The programme also encourages regional collaboration and the strengthening of local administrations, contributing to greater integration among Mediterranean societies.
Over the three days of the meeting, representatives from prominent institutions such as the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation, the European Training Foundation (ETF), MedCities, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), Casa Árabe, and Casa Mediterráneo will discuss the main challenges and opportunities in the region.
The meeting will serve as a platform for exchanging experiences, analysing regional development policies, and strengthening strategic alliances, positioning Alicante and Casa Mediterráneo as a reference centre for Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and cooperation.
