Travelling in a motorhome is one of the most enjoyable and liberating ways to explore roads, towns, and landscapes. However, there are many occasions when it is not possible to reach every destination with this type of vehicle. This often leads to motorhomes or campers "carrying" small two-wheeled vehicles such as a bicycle or a small motorcycle for these specific journeys.
And yes, they can be carried, but where? For instance, most motorhomes come equipped with a small compartment that acts as a trunk, generally with enough capacity to transport tools, small furniture, and also two-wheeled vehicles. The installation is simple and also provides security against theft as it allows for discreet storage, according to Yescapa. On the downside, it means losing storage space, so you will need to organize everything you need inside the motorhome very well.
You must also consider the Maximum Authorized Weight (MAW). Motorhomes have a low payload capacity, and the unladen weight is often close to the MAW. To ensure you are not exceeding it, check the vehicle's weight once you have loaded your two-wheeled vehicles into the hold/trunk.
Secondly, load carriers are an additional equipment that can be attached to the back of the motorhome to gain space. They are very practical for transporting bicycles, provided the MAW is respected once the vehicle is loaded. There are many options depending on the type of two-wheeled vehicle you wish to transport. One advantage of this accessory is that it is modular, but some models require drilling the exterior of the bodywork. Therefore, it is advisable to be well-informed before choosing, and it is also important to secure this piece against theft and weather conditions.
Finally, a motorcycle trailer will allow you to transport your two-wheeled vehicle in good condition. But before investing, consider some prerequisites. Regarding your vehicle's registration, check the weight the trailer can support to know which one suits you best. If you hold a category B license, your trailer must not exceed 750 kg. Trailers over 500 kg require a registration, a license plate, and specific insurance independent of the towing vehicle.
The advantage of the trailer is that it is not associated with the MAW, but you still need to respect the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer. On the other hand, the motorhome must have a special hitch to attach it.
